We are excited to announce an opportunity to master portrait painting with the incredicle James Bland.

On this two day oil painting masterclass, participants will be working from live models as James takes you through everything from drawing with paint to paint application, colour, the mechanics of light & form, composition and likeness.

The first day will involve the devlopment of technical skills such as drawing with paint, understand cool and warm tones in the face and completing a tonal study. On day two, participants will spend all day developing a portrait under James' careful guidance.

This course is suitable for beginners, however a basic working knowledge of oil painting is required.

About the Artist:

James Bland is a figurative artist who enjoys the surprises and the surrender of control that oil painting uniquely offers. Memory, folklore and dreams are the main subjects of his work and his paintings offer tantalising glimpses of narratives alongside the rigorously-observed depictions of light and form.

James paints in oils but first develops his ideas in sketchbooks before setting up his compositions in the studio with models and home-made props. As they progress, his paintings move away from being purely from direct observation towards memory and imagination, which is where the full range of influence is felt, from traditional Asian art to mediaeval manuscripts to children’s drawings.

James is a member of the New English Art Club and has won multiple awards including the Winsor & Newton Oil Painters Award at the Royal Instititute of Oil Painters.
